I haven’t posted anything about the MR2 for a while. Time for an update! I finally got around to installing the modified header, new downpipe, and cat from SV3Power for MOAR POWWWAAAA!!!

Top: old and shitty, Bottom: Shiny-new and Awesome!!!

When I swapped in the 20v Blacktop 4AGE in the the car, I had to use the exhaust manifold and downpipe from the original 16 valve motor since the 20 valve header interfered with the starter motor. The smaller ports and the ancient cat on the old exhaust meant I wouldn’t be getting the full power of the 20v, but I was eager to get the car back on the road.

Fast forward to today and the remedy came from SV3Power. They only make exhaust components for the Mk1 MR2 so a pretty niche market. They modified my original 20v header by adding about 2 inches to it so that it would clear the starter motor. I could have tracked down a C52 transmission from a later MR2 that has the starter motor on the other side, but tracking down MR2 parts can be a pain and this header mod only cost me about $60.

Install went very smoothly (with the exception of a broken 14mm deep well socket) and only took a couple of hours. I then eagerly hopped into the car and turned the key.

I was greeted with a whole new sound. The MR2 sounded angry...in a good way. I was quite surprised since I was still using the same muffler/exhaust after the cat. I’m assuming the old cat was super restrictive and/or clogged. The test drive did not disappoint. There’s more power everywhere, but the big difference is at the top end from about 6000-8400 rpm.

I’m now looking into a new exhaust setup for the cat-back portion of the exhaust because it sounds a little to ricey to me right now.

I’m running a stock 20v manifold and SV3 downpipe to stock exhaust on my SC. It definitely makes it sound better in-car, but didn’t change sound outside, or the power at all. The weight savings was really nice though.

I’m considering getting the SC style muffler from SV3 to replace the rusty 5Zigen exhaust thats on there now, but I don’t feel like shelling out another 300 bucks at the moment haha

Nice! My BT came with an old HKS 4-1 header that I’m sticking with. It sucks though because I need to fab everything behind it because the flange and exit are a different size.

Hows the swap going?

Never seen it myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the old HKS header is based on the TRD header. SV3 might be able to fab something up for ya

Ran into a snag that’s had it stupid close to done but not quite done for too long now. The engine’s in, everything’s plugged in and ready to go apart from the open header (I can make something ugly and not very good work as a stopgap), but the engine I bought is missing the fuel rail. The engine supplier is denying it even though I have pics of the engine on arrival, and I can’t find one anywhere. I got hold of primeMR2 because they have contacts in Japan and apparently it’s so stupid expensive that I may as well get a second BT before going that route. The next step is looking for people parting out theirs or selling blown motors. After that, there’s a company that makes a top-feed one designed for putting bigger injectors on for turbo applications, but I’m not sure if it will work with the stock injectors or not.

damn that sucks. I would check the forum classifieds or if you haven’t already, give Lithia Toyota a call. I don’t know if they can get you a fuel rail, but they do have or can get parts for the 20v 4AGE. Thats where I got a new water pump, timing belt & tensioner, and some other blacktop parts

I get the feeling that they’d get the same price that PrimeMR2 were able to get because they were finding new OEM ones from Toyota. I mostly got hold of them because I was hoping that they had a used one there that they could sell me or knew of something else that would work.
